Details:

The Samsung F480 seems to be a pretty popular handset, and Samsung has decided to make hay while the sun shines by offering yet another version of the F480 known as La Fleur ("the flower" if you don't speak French). Apart from the external cosmetic changes, everything else within remains the same. If your girlfriend have been pestering you (or rather, dropping hints) for a new cell phone, what better way than to surprise her this Valentine's Day than with this lovey dovey Samsung F480 La Fleur? It will be out in Russia and several other European countries, with no word on pricing as at press time.

Samsung

Details:

Tell me you didn’t see this coming. Sprint has prepared entirely new plans for their Samsung Instinct release. That was bound to happen once Apple announced they will sell the 3G iPhone for $199 and $299 with AT&T 2 year plans.

The Samsung Instinct was initially priced at $449.99, which is a more than fair price for what it has to offer. Sprint just sliced off $150 for a 2 year plan and a added a further $100 mail in rebate. And on top of that, Sprint will also be offering the for the full price to all customers who don’t want to get burdened with another 2 year plan. Is it cool or what.

I’d assume that if the Instinct had the same continuous and aggressive campaign the iPhone had, they would have a better fighting chance. About two weeks ago, when Spring presented the Instinct saying it was much better than the iPhone, I was arguing that although it seems better than the iPhone, it probably won’t match the 3G iPhone. But since the iPhone brought us only 3G and GPS, which is far less than the most of were expecting, I tend to rethink my Instinct vs iPhone comparison.

I’ll be curios how these devices will sell but inevitably Apple’s name will defeat Samsung. And the
Thunder from RIM isn’t even out yet!

LG Prada (GSM Triband) Mobile Phone

Details:

When it launched the Chocolate phone last year, LG established itself as a serious fashion-phone manufacturer. Gone are the days when the company made ugly lumps of plastic--now its mobile phones are synonymous with class and style. LG has in fact become so stylish that Prada, a fashion house rumored to have rejected many offers to make a co-branded phone in the past, has teamed up with it to create this new model.

The LG Prada is a very attractive, slim, candybar handset with a large color touchscreen that looks a tad like
Apple's iPhone. But, unlike many fashion phones on the market, it comes with a decent feature set. It was conceived by designers from both LG and Prada--Miuccia Prada herself was involved in its design. The LG Prada is expected to be available in April, but be warned: it will be popular, so getting your hands on one might be difficult.

Design of the LG Prada (GSM Triband) Mobile Phone:

This is one of the most attractive handsets we've ever seen. The LG Prada looks and feels as though it belongs in a glass case on display in a trendy flat, rather than stuffed in a bag or pocket. You will definitely be noticed when you use it.

Even the box it comes in looks as though it was designed to house a luxury watch, not a mobile phone. There's a trendy hard-leather case inside emblazoned with a Prada logo, as well as a Prada-branded cleaning cloth and a hands-free headset.

For a touchscreen handset, the LG Prada isn't that big, measuring a relatively pocket-friendly 54mm wide by 99mm tall by 12mm deep--it feels very light, too. It's wide enough to hold comfortably with one hand and it's fairly easy to tap the touchscreen with your thumb.

Features of the LG Prada (GSM Triband) Mobile Phone:

The first thing you'll notice when you turn on the LG Prada is a distinctive start-up sound that was, according to LG, created by Prada and sounds like something from one of the Saw horror movies--you'll want to turn this off straight away.

Once it stops screeching at you, you'll notice that the user interface looks great, with cute icons, and you can customise it to suit your taste. We particularly like the theme that displays a wriggling fish on the start page.

The touchscreen is large, bright and more responsive than those found on touchscreen phones we've previously tested. There's no stylus provided but we didn't feel awkward using our fingers. It works very well when you just need to tap an icon or dial a number, but as with many touchscreen phones, there isn't any tactile feedback when you're texting. This means that you're not always sure if you've pressed the right key or if the screen has registered your tap, which gets frustrating.

The other problem that a touchscreen phone brings is that it can get scratched rather easily and unless you keep the LG Prada in its leather pouch it will become tarnished. It also collects a great deal of grease when you hold it against your ear to make a call, making it look dirty.

There's a video player that supports MPEG-4 and H.263 formats, an FM radio and a music player that supports MP3 and ACC files, among others. The music player feels vaguely like Apple's iTunes and lets you adjust the play mode to repeat and shuffle tracks. One flaw is that there's no built-in 3.5mm jack to let you plug in a pair of standard headphones.

The 2-megapixel camera has an LED photo light and shoots both still pictures and video. We're slightly put out that the camera doesn't have autofocus, but using the large color touchscreen as a viewfinder works well enough.

Unusually, there's a document viewer that supports Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Acrobat files. Documents are reformatted to fit the width of the screen, so there's no need to scroll sideways to read the text. It works, but the small screen means you won't be using it to read War and Peace on the train.

There's an expandable microSD slot for storing all your favorite music and videos, and you get a 256MB card with the phone. Plug the Prada into your computer via a USB cable and you can use it as a mass storage device, which is useful for transferring files around. You can also connect it to other devices using Bluetooth.

A noteworthy but rather gimmicky feature is the world clock, which reminds us of Google Earth, in as much as it displays a globe you can then zoom in on. It looks great on the Prada's screen.

Finally, for such a large-screened handset, you might assume that the LG Prada would be great for browsing the Web, but it's hindered by two factors. The first is that the browser isn't very good--text pops up in the wrong position and images can look squashed. The other issue is that there's no 3G or Wi-Fi connectivity, so it takes a while for pages to download.

Performance of the LG Parada (GSM Triband) Mobile Phone:

Our battery lasted for two days before we needed to recharge it. The large screen drained a lot of power when the brightness was set to full, so once you've shown off your new purchase to your friends you'll want to turn this down.

The 2-megapixel camera is a little lacklustre and seems dated next to other phones that feature 3-megapixel cameras, such as the
Nokia N73 or the Sony Ericsson K800i. Using the large touchscreen as a viewfinder is great, but without autofocus all our shots came out quite blurry.

Audio quality during calls was good and we didn't notice any muffling or distortions during calls. The sound quality on the music player was also good and sounded okay over the loud speaker, but it's not loud enough to replace a hi-fi system.

Sony Ericsson W880i

Details:

Sony's joined the bandwagon and lost weight! With most of the mobile phone brands following the RAZR trend, the slim season seems like its here to stay. Sometime back, Sony Ericsson got their first slider in the Walkman series and now it's the slim handset. So here we have the Sony Ericsson W880i.

The sling of mobile phone releases from Sony Ericsson kicked off with the K550i which we saw earlier. Now it's the W880i, soon to be followed by the W200 and the W610. This year should be quite exciting as we'll get to watch the of mobile phone makers at war. Let's find out how competitive this phone from Sony Ericsson is.

Bundle

The Sony Ericsson W880i has a very basic bundle. At least the one we received for testing had just the below mentioned.

Sony Ericsson W880i (Handset)
1 GB Sony M2 Memory
Stereo Earplugs (HPM-70 Headset)
Dual Port Charger
USB FastPort Cable
Manual and CD

Expect to see an HPM-82 Headset and M2 Memory Adaptor in the actual package.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA

Details:

One of the most interesting and eagerly waited model of the year, Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 has gone another update and this is supposed to be third update. Sony Ericsson had updated the white paper of XPERIA few days back and confirmed that XPERIA will ship with 256 MB SDRAM. There is also improvement in battery performance and also XPERIA will now have another color- Steel Silver. Below are some of the new pictures from Sony Ericsson website. XPERIA is slated to release in mid of September this year.

Sony Ericsson T700

Details:

Sony Ericsson's second attempt at reviving the classic "T-series" line continues with the very compact Sony Ericsson T700 - a lightweight 3.5G handset that uses some of the styling cues from the classic Sony Ericsson T610 and following on from the slightly odd looking T65

Weighing in at just 78 grams and a thickness of just 10mm, the T700 is incredibly light for a handset of this specification. With 3.5G HSDPA support, 3G UMTS 2100, a QVGA (240 x 320 pixel) display, 3.2 megapixel main camera, video calling, expandable memory, stereo Bluetooth, a multimedia player, stereo speakers and an FM radio, the Sony Ericsson T700 squeezes in an impressive amount of features for a handset of this size.

The T700 includes a decently sized 512MB memory card in the box, and of course this can be expanded using Memory Stick Micro (M2) cards.

Perhaps inevitably there are some compromises. The 2 inch display is quite small compared to some of the T700's rivals, the camera appears to lack autofocus and there doesn't appear to be a standard audio jack socket. On the positive side is the T700's light weight, and the quoted battery life is pretty good too with up to 9.5 hours talktime on GSM and 4.5 hours on 3G.

The handset is attractively finished in a shiny case that mimics the original T610, but with a much more conventional keypad than the odd looking T650. Sony Ericsson say that "the slim elegance of the T700 gives users a premium experience at a mid-range price point - perfect for the design conscious" which pitches the T700 as a fashion phone, although with these specifications it would make a pretty good business phone as well.

Sony Ericsson say that the T700 should be available during early Q4 2008 in "Black on Silver", "Black on Red" and "Shining Silver" colour combinations.

Sony Ericsson C905 Cyber-shot

Details:

There are also a host of features to ensure that you get the best pictures from this camera phone including. face detection, smart contrast, geo tagging and there is even a xenon flash and a camera flash.

The C905 Cyber-shot also has a built in accelerometer for screen auto rotation, as well as GPS and WiFi and there is even a TV out port, that’s a lots of features on a mobile phone.

The Sony Ericsson C905 is a quad-band mobile phone with support for GSM, EDGE, UTMS and HSDPA, there is also A2DP stereo Bluetooth, a built in FM Radio which even has RDS and of course USB.

Memory wise there is 160MB built in with the option to expand up to 8GB with a Memory Stick Micro, so there will be plenty of room to store all the photos you take with the 8.1 megapixel camera.

Now you would expect the Sony Ericsson C905 to be a large mobile phone considering the amount of features that are packed into it, but it is surprisingly small measuring just 104 x 49 x 18mm and weighing just 136g.

Overall the Sony Ericsson C905 is bound to be a hit, with that amount of features in a mobile phone you really wouldn’t need to carry your digital camera around with you anymore unless you were a serious photographer.

Sony Ericsson W980

Details:

Sony Ericsson has plumped up its Walkman line just a tad today with the introduction of the W980, a pretty well power-packed flip sporting 8GB of internal storage, a generously sized external display, and something the company calls "Walkman on Top." The technology (if you can really call it that) replicates the music player interface in its entirety on the external display, allowing full player control without popping the phone open. Other goodies include an FM transmitter and PlayNow support -- a Walkman phone through and through, if we do say so ourselves. Look for it to launch in Q3 in quadband EDGE flavor with HSDPA 2100 (read: no good for use in the US). Sorry about the microscopic photo, by the way, SE's site is having difficulty at the moment.

W550i

Details:

Sony Ericsson is the first name that can be trusted, especially, when it comes to music phones. Sony Ericsson W850i is the phone from walkman series presented by Sony Ericsson. Managing your music files in W850i is quite easy as it provides simple options to organize all of the files according to genre and artist. An equalizer is included that can be used to create the right type of sound for your songs. Sound quality is also good enough, but the main concern is that there is no sufficient internal memory and overall navigation is not really user friendly, but it is a nice walkman phone, nevertheless.

Sony Ericsson W580i is another phone from the walkman series and it is quite similar to W850i as it also incorporates the slider style. Sound quality is nice as well and it also provides a good level of convenience in using and handling all the music options. Music recognition is other amazing option. It also contains an equalizer with the option of Mega Bass and Widening Stereo which lends a helping hand in making the sound quality even more impressive. However, the only concern is that speed of the phone is not all that good as most of the users have complained about slow processing, in general.

Apart from Sony Ericsson, Nokia have really become able to carve a place of its own in music phones as well. Nokia N95 8GB is really an amazing phone by Nokia in all respects. It has 3.5 mm audio output jack that makes it wonderful to use as a music phone. Handling music is really easy as there is a double slider design that Nokia has incorporated in this mobile. Voice quality in head phones become even more impressive and the audio jack make it easy to use other head phones as well. Equalizer and visualization option makes it much more impressive. It certainly is a complete package, but, price can be a concern for some people. However, there are some other affordable options as well and Nokia 5310 is one of those options. First thing about this mobile is its style and secondlyits usability as it has dedicated keys which are to enhance the design and to provide the easy access to your music files. Sound quality is really wonderful and headphone along with equalizer makes it much more attractive to buy. However, there are some complaints by the people about its firmware that creates problem while playing music as mobile hangs while listening to music. However, newer mobiles are coming without this glitch and make it the perfect choice for music lovers.

ROKR E6 is a nice music phone by Motorola hat comes with all necessary features to handle music. Sound quality is great for this mobile and that makes it a notable set in Motorola`s arsenal. With 3.5mm stereo headphone jack and dedicated music keys it becomes even impressive. IT plays all file formats and provides you the best sound through wireless Bluetooth stereo headphone. So, it can be considered if Motorola is your choice.

Sony Ericsson K630 Cybershot

Details:

However the looks and this turbo 3G capability is about the only feature to distinguish Sony Ericsson K630 Cybershot from other camera phones.

Other K630 Cybershot specs include 2 megapixel camera and front CIF camera for video telephony, Bluetooth 2.0 A2DP and USB 2. connectivity, Memory Stick Micro card slot, 3.5 mm headphone jack, MPEG4/H.263-4 capable media player, POP3/IMAP4 e-mail client, PC synchronization and shortcuts to various Internet services from MSN, YAHOO and Google.

Overall Sony Ericsson K630 is a nice and (highly likely) affordable 3.5G cameraphone.

The SE K630 price has not been listed yet, but you’ll be probably be able to get it for around 100 Euro with a contract from your carrier as it starts shipping for Christmas season.

Sony Ericsson W810i

Details:

I started scouting for a mobile in the Rs. 10K-15K price range a couple of months back. A lot of names flew around – the Nokias, Motorolas, Samsungs and Sony Ericssons. I was fascinated by the extensive range of phones available in this price range. This was my first move to a mobile featuring more than the usual voice and data features and I wanted the best one for the money I’ll be paying. I started doing extensive research on the mobiles. The Univercell website was the reference for comparing the price and featured of the mobiles. In addition, the Mobile-Review site provided a wide coverage of various mobile phones and their features. Check out this site if you want to have a look at a different view about the phone.

My initial shortlist included the following mobiles:

  • Nokia : N70, N73
  • Motorola : A1200 (Motoming), Moto Rokr
  • Samsung : D600, D900i
  • Sony Ericsson : K750i, W810i, W830i, W610i

Every person has his/her own reasons for buying a mobile. There is nothing called “the best mobile” in any price range as we have to factor in the competing products. Ultimately the final rationale for selecting a particular mobile over the rest is solely an individual preference. And this is exactly the reason why there are so many products in the market with scores of unique and differentiating features, competing to grab the attention of the unsuspecting customer. To cut the long story short, whatever reasoning I give below is my personal choice made out of my own set of preferences which I try to put as rationally as possible. This need not be the best choice for the whole world, but has worked great for me. Hence I’m putting it.

I’ll first give the reasons for eliminating the mobiles I didn’t want.

The two Nokia models were the first to go out for two reasons. First, I didn’t need a 3G phone as there is no network operator providing the service in India and it’ll take some time before 3G networks are rolled out and the price becomes feasible enough to use the service. Second is the inherent suspicion about the high end Nokia models. This has got to do with many of my friends who used to complain that Nokia phones are slow and hang frequently. Though I don’t like to make generalisations, this piece of news was always running in the back of my mind when I look at Nokia phones. Plus, these two models weren’t the greatest looking on the planet.

Next follows the slide phones. It’s not that I don’t like slide phones as such. In fact, I was too impressed by Samsung D900i and Sony Ericsson W830i. I had to forego W830i because of its poor camera (a 2 megapixel without autofocus). In addition both D900i and W830i had a keypad which didn’t have good reviews for fast typing and usage. This is especially important for me as I need keypads which are fast and easy to use. With heavy heart I had to let go of Samsung D900i, as it looked really great with respect to all the other factors under consideration.

Considering the necessity for a keypad (atleast in the near term) I had to rule out Motoming and Moto Rokr. I was impressed by both these models, especially Motoming for its amazing looks and use. But then, I’m still not into the corporate life and don’t need a mobile with PDA features or one which requires the use of stylus.

Finally, I was left with 3 models, all Sony Ericsson – K750i, W610i and W810i. All the three models have similar features. K750 is a highly successful model – a milestone for Sony Ericsson. However it’s now a piece of history. In place of K750i come W810i and W610i – both walkman phones and great looks. I settle for W810i as the camera has relatively better protection compared to W610i, though the mobile is a little thicker.

W810i

My decision to purchase W810i was partially inspired by my college friend Hariprasad, who bought the same mobile a month before I bought it. This gave me ample time to know how the mobile is performing before deciding to purchase it. The black bar-type phone with orange logo markings and orange display is reason enough for me to fall in love with this mobile at first sight.

My impressions about the phone and its features after one month of usage:

Overall Design

SE W810i is a pretty compact phone with no wastage of space anywhere. The display is big enough for a bar phone. The camera, flash and the speakers are well integrated in the rear. The camera button and the zoom buttons are available on the right, while a customisable play button and the memory slot are available on the left. The integrated port on the bottom and the power button on top complete the overall design. The keypads are soft and very easy to use. The main reason for this is that each number key is designed as a standalone button that makes it easier to feel and use.

Walkman

The phone has excellent playback capabilities. Put on your handsfree and set the equaliser mode to Megabass, that’s it. You cut out the rest of the world and can enjoy music in your own world of eternal bliss. If you are too bored to put on the headphones, simply connect the speakers that come with the package and listen to the same music in a room with the effect of big speakers. The only problem I faced with this phone is the lack of option to jump to a particular section in a song/video being played. This was a nuisance, especially when playing a movie when you may want to go back or forward a few seconds to see a particular scene again.

Camera

The 2 megapixel, autofocus camera provides excellent photos in daylight. Night-time photography is a suspect with the appearance of lots of grains in the image. The phone has a macro mode to take close range shots of small objects and three picture size options. The flash is very weak and is not of much use in dark. It’s more of use as a flashlight in dark to guide you around than as a camera flash. We can take photos of 3 different sizes – small (160x120), medium (640x480) and large (1632x1224). There is no option to turn off the shutter sound (except in silent mode). This is a small nuisance. The video size is very small at 176x144 pixels when the camera can take photos upto 1632x1224 pixels. The camera doesn’t have a protective cover. But this has not created much of a problem as the phone design is such that the possibility of scratches happening is minimal.

Nokia 6230

Details:

Just when other brands have finally started making themselves visible in the mainstream GSM mobile phone market, Nokia has come out with a phone that may not only turn out to be the most successful phone this year, but also the most complete phone they have come to offer yet. Without further delay, I'll delve straight to the part of the review that matters...

Looks that Kill
The Nokia 6230 astounds you from the moment you open the box and gaze at its well chiseled looks. It comes with a battery charger, a stereo headset, CD containing the necessary software and the user manual.

I have to admit that the 6230 sports the best design in terms of looks and usability that I have seen from Nokia. Usually they either go overboard with the design factor making the phone practically unusable, or they just play it safe with a very user-friendly but uninteresting design. Here, fortunately they've attained a perfect balance.

Measuring 103 x 44 x 20 mm, it's the perfect size for a phone, but its 97 g weight may not make it the best option to carry around in your front shirt pocket. The overall build quality feels sturdy yet comfortable.
The 65,000-color TFT display is slightly bigger in dimension than say 6610, but it still supports resolutions up to 128 x 128 pixels. The screen clarity is excellent with a good amount of brightness and clarity to the level that matters. Some users may, however, have a problem with the screen size as they may consider it a bit too small for viewing video clips or pictures, but once you actually use it and see the clarity it stores even at that resolution, I doubt there'll be much left to complain about. All in all, the screen seems fit for all phone functions. A bigger screen would result in an unnecessarily bigger phone without too much of a performance difference.

Nokia has opted to go for a rubber feel keypad with this one, which is another good design decision. The keys don't only feel better, but they also provide the right level of friction during usage, which prevents your finger from slipping off them. The numeric keys are decently sized, and I didn't once face a problem of pressing two buttons at once or a slowdown in my typing speed. The directional pad is comfortable to use, which is a good thing, as Nokia has shifted all the primary functions onto it, making it also the most used button.
The camera is sized and placed just like the one present in the Nokia 7250. The IR is stylishly placed on the right side of the phone (when facing you) and the volume control is located on the left.

Nokia N91

Details:

Announced back in 2005, at the time the Nokia N91 appeared to be the geek phone of choice. And that wasn’t down to the fact that it was one of the first Symbian OS 9 and S60 v3 phones. Nor was it the stylish metal casing. Nope, it was the simple fact that this phone has a massive amount of storage. A 4 Gigabyte ‘internal hard drive’ to be precise - most likely along the lines of the Compact Flash based micro drives that were powering the iPod Mini’s of the time. It became an instant object of lust. The Wi-Fi connectivity may have helped as well...

Fast forward to today and, with the N91 ready to hit the retail channels, most people are now attracted to the N80, which has a similar feature set but just looks a lot cooler. Which is a shame because the N91 is a cracking little phone and could easily be “the phone to recommend” to the consumer if it weren't for a few worrying little niggles.

Okay, first up to bat is the new version of S60. Now there’s nothing fundamentally new to the end-user, we’re still in standard 176x208 screen resolution here, so if you’ve been using previous S60 phones there's no learning curve to get over (apart from the two applications that make the N91 currently stand out, the music player and the web browser). With the update of the underlying Symbian OS (to 9.1) the plethora of third party C++ applications out there will not be able to run at all on the N91 – this is vitally important if you rely on an application you’ve installed. My biggest problem when reviewing the N91 is that I lost my ability to read eBooks – and it will stay lost until a programmer either tweaks a S60v2 version or someone else writes one from scratch to fill a gap in the marketplace. It'll happen, though the question is when?

Built into the N91, there’s also not the huge range of extra applications found in the upcoming Enterprise devices that have been leading the recent S60 charge. The standard PDA applications are here (Contacts, Calendar, Notes and To-Do– but watch out, as the To-Do application is no longer a separate icon, but part of the Calendar suite. Add in a couple of ancillary applications (Flash Lite player, tutorial application, units converter and calculator), the email client and the aforementioned music player and web browser and you have a rather lean looking smartphone ready for action.

The N91 is designed for one task, and that’s to be a damm fine music phone. This means stuff like Office compatible word processors and Over The Air synchronisation are being left, quite rightly, to the business-focussed devices. Strangely, Push To Talk and Nokia’s Instant Messaging client are still onboard, which indicates that these must now be considered as part of the base package of S60.

Nokia N98

Details:

Here is a great photoshop effort from the French: the Nokia N98 with amazing features including an integrated GPS receiver just like the N95 (Nokia N98 high resolution).

Here are the made up specs for this made up phone:

  • 7.2 mega pixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens
  • 5x optical zoom (20x with digital)
  • 3.5″ inch touch screen
  • integrated GPS receiver
  • integrated TNT receiver (Télévision Numérique Terrestre - this is what French call digitally broadcast TV channels)
  • Symbian S70 3rd edition
  • 3D graphics accelerator
  • bluetooth
  • Wi-Fi (b,g,n)
  • HSDPA
  • video recording at 720×576 and 30fps
  • Multimedia support

5x optical zoom made us laugh the hardest. It is not mentioned in this list but I’m sure the N98 will be able to handle microSD cards and have a battery that lasts 12 hours on a single charge.

Nokia 6610

Details:

According to Route 66, the company that puts the GPS navigation software on Nokia 6610’s, Nokia is aiming to put a GPS chip in every single handset they manufacture.

Although the N series have started to get GPS, Nokia is apparently aiming to put GPS into every one of its phones in the future, according to Route 66’s account manager for Britain, Mike Goodenough. He told us “Nokia’s goal is to be at the top of navigation”, bar none.

In essence we’ll see GPS in everyday mobile phones - even pay as you go cheapies. It’s another selling point in the great mobile phone upgrade push. The downside is, of course, that it’ll batter battery life. GPS can be turned off though and it’s a damn sight more efficient than using a separate GPS dongle and using Bluetooth for the two to talk.

Nokia 7360

Details:

Features of Nokia 7360: The Nokia 7360 is a low end fashion phone that comes in "coffee brown" and "warm amber" colour schemes. It fits into the same slot in Nokia's range as the hideous Nokia 7260 "Chav's phone", but it's a much more restrained and tastefully designed device.

It's pretty basic in specification terms, the Nokia 7360 with a 128x160 pixel display, VGA resolution camera, FM radio, web browser and email client, push-to-talk, voice activated user interface and fashion themes. The 7360 even comes with a velvet bag to carry it in.

At 92 grams in weight and 105x45x18mm, the Nokia 7360 is about average for a "candy bar" phone. Talktime is a shortish 4 hours with up to 14 days standby (which is very good)

The 7360 supports MP3 ringtones, but doesn't have an MP3 player. Nor does it have Bluetooth. Having said that, Nokia expect the 7360 to cost just 200 euros before subsidy and taxes.

Overall, the Nokia 7360 is a good value phone and attractive too. Even though we slated the old 7260 when we saw it last year, it went on to become one of the best selling handsets of 2005, so we can expect the 7360 to be a best seller too...

Nokia 3600 Slide

Details:

Features ok Nokia 3600: The Nokia 3600 Slide is another new slider from Nokia, combining cute looks with the latest in mobile phone features.

The handset is crafted from metal with a soft ceramic paint finishing, and will be available in two colour variants: black or red/pink. The face of the 3600 Slide is occupied by the 2” 16.7 million colour TFT LCD display and navigational key strip: consisting of the standard 5-way navigational pad, two soft keys, one pick-up key and one hang-up key.

Sliding open the 3600 Slide reveals the large-keyed numerical keypad – perfect for messaging! SMS, MMS, and e-mail (IMAP4, POP3, and SMTP) messaging is supported with T9 predictive text dictionaries for local languages pre-installed.

A 3.2mpx digital camera sits on the back of the 3600 Slide, with a full auto-focus lens, 8x digital zoom, and dual-LED flash. Video can be recorded at VGA (640 x 480 pixel) resolution and with TV-out (Nokia 2.5mm AV connector) support you can share your videos and images with friends and family.

The 3600 Slide is the first Nokia handset to offer background noise cancellation for “outstanding audio performance and uninterrupted calls.” With quad-band 2G network coverage (GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz), the handset is a true world traveller. Unfortunately 3G networks are not supported.

Nokia’s Series 40 3rd edition platform is at the core of the 3600 Slide, with a range of pre-installed applications: Nokia Maps, Nokia Search, Opera Browser, Yahoo! Go and many more. Java MIDP 2.0 applications are also supported if you wish to add to the collection.

A stereo music player is built-in to the handset, supporting popular audio formats including MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, and WMA. The 860mAh battery provides the handset with up to 10 hours of audio playback, and you can easily synchronize your music using Windows Media Player 10 or 11.

For storage Nokia provide 30MB of internal shared memory, with a microSD memory card slot that supports cards up to 4GB in size. To start you off Nokia include a 512MB card in the sales pack.

The 3600 Slide is due to be released on the market in the third quarter of 2008. It will be available for ~$285 AUD (175 EUR) before taxes and subsidies.

The Magic Touch of the Nokia 5800 and Nokia N97

Details:

Anyone who likes touchscreen phones should be excited; the most well known face in the industry has announced not one, but TWO mobile phones: the sleek Nokia 5800 and the completely jaw-dropping Nokia N97. A lot of people are under the false assumption that the Nokia 5800 is the first touchscreen phone to wear the Nokia label. It isn't. The opposite's true, because there have been a few touch-based phones to wear the Nokia name. Starting with the 7700, we've seen a couple of Nokia mobile phones which are controlled by you prodding and poking the screen. They all had reasonably big (for their time) screens, but the other feature they had in common, unfortunately, was that they were utterly rubbish. Only one of those handsets, the 6708, displayed any promise, but that was destined exclusively to be sold in China, and thus, it never saw the light of day in Britain. So, we were relegated to handsets that were utter, and complete bobbins. However, these unpleasant memories have now been exorcised by the debut of two new Nokia mobile phones, both of which come with touchscreens, and both of which are much, much nicer...Nokia 5800 - if music be the food of love...First up is a whole new member of Nokia's Xpress line of music mobile phones, the mouth-watering Nokia 5800. This one's quite obviously made for music and video; you can tell by the separate XpressMedia touch-key that opens a list of shortcuts to music, videos, the web, and so on. Oh, and the Nokia 5800 has a 3.2 inch touchscreen, to let you muck about with those different media content. Basically, the Nokia 5800 was created to be a little handheld jukebox and movie player, and as music handsets go, this is just about the sweetest. The Nokia 5800 has also got a 3 megapixel camera, HSDPA internet connection and sat-nav, so that it's a wonderful all-rounder, on top of being a superb media player. Oh, and it has a strap to clip on a fake guitar pick. That's pretty cool, that. However, the Nokia 5800 is very definitely a mid-range device; it isn't, nor was it ever meant to be, an absolute top-ender. That position goes to another handset...Nokia N97 - the single best phone EVER made? With the Nokia 5800 all set to bring touchscreen mobile phones to the mid-range market, that leaves a very big gap at the very top-end, and yes, there IS a touchscreen mobile phone waiting to be unleashed to fill that gap: the utterly awesome Nokia N97. This uses the same Symbian S60 Touch operating system and crams it inside the body of a proper, full-tilt smartphone. Which means it has an even more huge, 3.5 inch screen, a slide out QWERTY keyboard, and the camera now weighs in at a meaty 5 megapixels. The Nokia N97 is, obviously, destined to be the new flagship Nseries mobile phone, and it really is as high-spec as we'd heard from rumours, with HSDPA, sat-nav, digital compass, and integrated Flash, meaning you get an internet experience that tops any other mobile phones! Put simply the Nokia N97 is simple incredible. It gleefully relieves itself over other mobile phones and as the Nokia 5800 angles firmly for the mid-range, I'm predicting that the Nokia N97 will totally DESTROY the competition in 2009!
